Most people quote verse 11, where Moses prays for the people to be multiplied a thousand times over. Most people skip verse 12, where he immediately complains about how much of a heavy burden they are to carry.
The subversive truth here is that God’s blessing actually created Moses’s burden. We often think that if we are in God’s will, things should get lighter. Deuteronomy 1 tells a different story: The bigger the mission, the heavier the burden. Carrying that weight is the price of a promise being kept.
